This photograph shows two young Amish boys and their dog on their way to the pond to cut ice for he ice house. Each farm has an ice house which has to be well insulated with straw and well stocked with ice during the winter. Since they have no electricity the Amish depend on their ice lasting through the summer to keep things cold. I have talked to several farmers about this and I still find it incredible that they are able to keep ice through the hot summer months.
